Ellensburg School District students will begin classes on Tuesday, Sept. 8, 2026, the day after Labor Day, marking the first time in recent history the district has started school on this date. The change comes because Labor Day falls on Sept. 7, 2026, requiring an earlier start to meet the 180-day instructional requirement before the Juneteenth holiday.
Assistant Superintendent Jennifer Kuntz, who leads the calendar committee, stated the decision was made after a year of deliberation to avoid a half-day return on June 22. The committee includes teachers, administrators, classified staff, parents, and the Board of Directors. The district will also implement a $0. 15 meal price increase for middle and high school students and adults, raising lunch costs from $4 to $4. 15 for students 6-12 and from $5. 50 to $5. 65 for adults.
